Seaver made his major league debut with the Mets in 1967. He quickly established himself as one of the best young pitchers in the game. In 1969, he led the Mets to their first World Series championship, going 25-7 with a 2.21 ERA. He was named the National League Rookie of the Year and the Cy Young Award winner.

Seaver continued to pitch at a high level throughout the 1970s. He won 20 or more games six times and led the league in strikeouts three times. In 1975, he threw a no-hitter against the St. Louis Cardinals.

In 1977, Seaver was traded to the Cincinnati Reds. He pitched for the Reds for four seasons, winning 108 games and helping them win the World Series in 1975.

In 1981, Seaver signed with the Chicago White Sox. He pitched for the White Sox for three seasons, winning 55 games. In 1984, he signed with the Mets for a second stint. He pitched for the Mets for two seasons, winning 17 games.

Seaver retired from baseball in 1986. He finished his career with a 311-205 record, a 2.86 ERA, and 3,640 strikeouts. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992.

After his retirement, Seaver worked as a broadcaster for the Mets and was a special instructor for the team. He also founded the Tom Seaver Foundation, which supports children's charities.
