In 1978, Edwards and Steptoe achieved a major breakthrough when they successfully fertilized an egg outside the body and implanted it into a woman's uterus. Nine months later, the woman gave birth to a healthy baby girl, Louise Brown, the first "test tube baby."

The birth of Louise Brown was a major scientific achievement, but it also led to a great deal of controversy. Some people argued that IVF was unethical, while others worried about the potential consequences of creating "designer babies."

Edwards and Steptoe continued to develop their IVF technique, and in the years that followed, they helped thousands of couples have children. However, their work was not without its setbacks.
