Early Military Career
Bulfin quickly rose through the ranks, earning a commission as an ensign in the 48th Regiment of Foot in 1746. He served with the regiment in Scotland during the Jacobite Rebellion, and later in the West Indies during the Seven Years' War. In 1759, he was promoted to captain and appointed as aide-de-camp to General James Wolfe.
Service in North America
Bulfin played a key role in Wolfe's successful campaign against the French in Canada. He commanded a grenadier company at the Battle of Quebec in 1759, and was one of the first officers to enter the city after the fall of the French fortifications. For his bravery and leadership, Bulfin was promoted to lieutenant-colonel and appointed as commander of the 48th Regiment of Foot.
In 1763, Bulfin was appointed as the military governor of Montreal. He served in this role for two years, during which time he oversaw the construction of new fortifications and improved the city's defenses. He also played a key role in suppressing the Pontiac Rebellion, a Native American uprising against British rule.
Return to Europe
In 1765, Bulfin returned to Europe with the 48th Regiment of Foot. He served in Ireland for several years before being deployed to Gibraltar in 1779. During the Great Siege of Gibraltar, Bulfin commanded the 48th Regiment in the defense of the fortress against the combined forces of Spain and France. He distinguished himself in several engagements, and was promoted to brigadier-general in 1781.
Later Career and Legacy
Bulfin continued to serve in the British Army until his retirement in 1798. He was promoted to major-general in 1782, and to lieutenant-general in 1793. In 1798, he was appointed as colonel of the 88th Regiment of Foot. He died in London in 1799, at the age of 79.
Despite his distinguished military career, General Sir Edward Bulfin has been largely forgotten by history. However, his contributions to British military history are significant. He was a brave and capable commander who played a key role in several important campaigns. His legacy should be remembered and celebrated.
