Early Life and Career
Tom Benson was born in New Orleans in 1927. His parents were poor, and he grew up in a modest home. From a young age, Benson worked odd jobs to help his family make ends meet. He also excelled in school and went on to earn a degree in accounting from Loyola University New Orleans.
After college, Benson worked as an accountant for a local insurance company. He quickly rose through the ranks and eventually became the company's president. In 1972, he founded his own insurance company, Benson & Associates. The company was a huge success and made Benson a millionaire.
Ownership of the Saints and Pelicans
In 1985, Benson purchased the New Orleans Saints football team. The team was struggling at the time, but Benson quickly turned it around. He invested heavily in the team and brought in talented players and coaches. Under Benson's ownership, the Saints became one of the most successful teams in the NFL, winning the Super Bowl in 2009.
In 2012, Benson purchased the New Orleans Pelicans basketball team. The Pelicans were also struggling at the time, but Benson once again turned them around. He invested in the team and brought in talented players and coaches. Under Benson's ownership, the Pelicans became one of the most successful teams in the NBA, making the playoffs several times.
Legacy
Tom Benson died in 2018 at the age of 90. He left behind a legacy of success and philanthropy. He was a generous donor to many charitable organizations, and he was also a strong supporter of the city of New Orleans.
