John Dee was a brilliant and enigmatic figure who lived during the turbulent era of the English Renaissance. He was a mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, and alchemist, but he is best known for his work on angelic magic. Dee believed that he had been chosen by God to communicate with angels, and he spent his life trying to develop a system of magic that would allow him to do so.

Dee's work on angelic magic was groundbreaking, and it had a profound influence on the development of Western occultism. He was the first person to develop a systematic approach to angelic magic, and he created a number of new magical tools and techniques. Dee's work also helped to popularize the idea of the angelic hierarchy, and he is credited with introducing the Enochian language into Western occultism.

In this article, we will explore Dee's life and work, and we will examine the fascinating world of angelic magic that he helped to create.

John Dee's Early Life

John Dee was born in London in 1527. His father was a wealthy merchant, and Dee received a privileged education. He studied at Cambridge University, where he excelled in mathematics and astronomy. Dee also became interested in astrology and alchemy, and he began to experiment with magical practices.

In 1555, Dee was appointed to the prestigious position of Royal Mathematician to Queen Elizabeth I. This position gave Dee access to the royal court, and he quickly became a trusted advisor to the queen. Dee used his influence to promote his own occult interests, and he was instrumental in founding the Society of Antiquaries, which was dedicated to the study of ancient history and languages.

Dee's Work on Angelic Magic

Dee began to develop his system of angelic magic in the 1560s. He was inspired by the writings of the medieval Neoplatonist philosopher Marsilio Ficino, who believed that angels were intermediaries between God and man. Dee also drew on the work of the Arabic philosopher al-Ghazali, who had developed a system of magic based on the names of God.

Dee believed that angels could be invoked and commanded by using their true names. He spent years studying the Bible and other ancient texts in order to compile a list of angelic names. Dee also developed a number of magical tools and techniques to help him communicate with angels. These tools included the Enochian language, which Dee claimed had been revealed to him by the angels.

Dee's system of angelic magic was complex and dangerous. He believed that only the most pure and virtuous people could safely practice it. Dee also warned that the misuse of angelic magic could lead to madness or death.

The Dee-Kelly Experiments

In 1582, Dee began to collaborate with Edward Kelley, a young man who claimed to have the ability to see and communicate with angels. Together, Dee and Kelley conducted a series of experiments that they believed would allow them to contact the angels and obtain their assistance.

The Dee-Kelly experiments were conducted in a darkened room, and they involved the use of a crystal ball or "scryer." Dee would ask Kelley to gaze into the crystal ball and describe what he saw. Kelley would then relay the messages of the angels to Dee, who would write them down.

The Dee-Kelly experiments produced a vast body of material, including the Enochian language, the Enochian Tablets, and the Book of Loagaeth. These texts contain a wealth of information about the angelic hierarchy, the nature of reality, and the secrets of magic.

The Legacy of John Dee

John Dee was a brilliant and influential figure in the history of Western occultism. His work on angelic magic was groundbreaking, and it had a profound influence on the development of the occult sciences. Dee's writings continue to be studied by occultists today, and his ideas continue to inspire new generations of seekers.

John Dee was a complex and fascinating figure who lived in a time of great intellectual and spiritual upheaval. His work on angelic magic was a bold attempt to bridge the gap between the human and divine realms. Dee's legacy is a mixed one, but there is no doubt that he was one of the most important figures in the history of Western occultism.
