Carnegie Peter Krass was born in New York City on February 23, 1923. He was the son of Jewish immigrants from Russia and Austria. Krass's father was a tailor, and his mother was a homemaker.

Krass grew up in the Bronx, and he attended public schools there. He was a bright student, and he excelled in math and science. After graduating from high school, Krass attended the City College of New York, where he majored in chemistry.
