Burckhardt was born in Basel, Switzerland, in 1908. He studied art history and archaeology at the University of Zurich, and later worked as a curator at the Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo. In the 1950s, he moved to Marrakech, Morocco, where he spent the rest of his life.

Burckhardt's writings provide a unique perspective on the relationship between East and West. He argued that the traditional cultures of both East and West have a great deal to offer each other, and that a dialogue between these two worlds is essential for the future of humanity.

Burckhardt's work on Islamic art and architecture is particularly important. He was one of the first Western scholars to appreciate the beauty and significance of Islamic art, and he helped to introduce this art to a wider audience. His book Art of Islam: Language and Meaning is considered to be a classic in the field.

Burckhardt's writings on spirituality are also very important. He was a deeply spiritual man, and his writings reflect his deep understanding of the nature of religion. He argued that religion is not simply a matter of belief, but a way of life. He also argued that the different religions of the world are all expressions of the same essential truth.
