Civil War

When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Smith resigned his commission in the United States Army and joined the Confederate Army. He was appointed a brigadier general and commanded a brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia under General Robert E. Lee. Smith fought in the Seven Days Battles and the Battle of Antietam. In 1863, he was promoted to major general and commanded the Trans-Mississippi Department, which included the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas.

Smith's command in the Trans-Mississippi Department was a difficult one. He was outnumbered and outgunned by the Union forces, and he had to deal with a number of Confederate generals who were jealous of his authority. Despite these challenges, Smith managed to keep the Union forces at bay for several years. He won a number of important victories, including the Battle of Mansfield and the Battle of Pleasant Hill. However, he was eventually defeated by the Union forces in the Battle of Nashville in 1864.

Post-War Years

After the war, Smith went into exile in Mexico. He returned to the United States in 1875 and became a professor of mathematics at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. He died in Sewanee on March 28, 1893.

Legacy

Kirby Smith was a controversial figure during his lifetime, and he remains so today. Some historians believe that he was a brilliant general who was unfairly criticized by his contemporaries. Others believe that he was a reckless and overconfident commander who made a number of serious mistakes. Regardless of one's opinion of Smith, there is no doubt that he was a significant figure in the Civil War.
