Liliane Bettencourt was born in 1922 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. Her father, Eugène Schueller, was the founder of L'Oréal, the world's largest cosmetics company. Bettencourt inherited her father's fortune in 1957 and became one of the richest women in the world.

Bettencourt was a private person who rarely gave interviews or appeared in public. However, in 2010, she became embroiled in a scandal that rocked Paris and led to the downfall of several politicians.

The Bettencourt Scandal

In 2010, it was revealed that Bettencourt had been giving large sums of money to François-Marie Banier, a photographer and writer who was 25 years her junior. Banier had received over €1 billion from Bettencourt, and some of this money was allegedly used to fund political campaigns.

The Bettencourt scandal quickly became a major political scandal in France. Several politicians were implicated in the scandal, including Nicolas Sarkozy, the former president of France, and Carla Bruni, his wife. Éric Woerth, the former budget minister, and Patrick Balkany, the former mayor of Levallois-Perret, were also implicated in the scandal.

The scandal led to a number of investigations and trials. In 2015, Banier was convicted of abuse of weakness and sentenced to three years in prison. Woerth was convicted of corruption and sentenced to four years in prison. Balkany was convicted of money laundering and sentenced to five years in prison.

Bettencourt's Later Years

After the scandal, Bettencourt withdrew from public life. She died in 2017 at the age of 94. Her daughter, Françoise Bettencourt Meyers, inherited her fortune and became the world's richest woman.

The Bettencourt scandal was one of the biggest political scandals in French history. It led to the downfall of several politicians and tarnished the reputation of Liliane Bettencourt, the world's richest woman.
