Early Life and Childhood
Dennis Rader was born on March 9, 1945, in Wichita, Kansas. He was the eldest of four children. His father was a stonemason and his mother was a homemaker. Rader's childhood was reportedly unremarkable. He was a good student and enjoyed playing sports.
However, Rader also had a dark side. He was known to torture and kill animals. He also developed an obsession with bondage and sadism. Rader's parents were unaware of his dark side, and they were shocked when he was arrested for murder.
The BTK Murders
Rader's first victims were the Otero family. In January 1974, he broke into their home and killed all four members of the family. Rader then sent a letter to the police, claiming responsibility for the murders. He signed the letter "BTK," which stood for "Bind, Torture, Kill."
Over the next decade, Rader would kill nine more people. His victims included children and adults, men and women. Rader often tortured his victims before killing them. He also sent letters to the police and the media, taunting them and describing his crimes in detail.
The BTK murders terrorized Wichita. Residents were afraid to let their children play outside, and they were constantly looking over their shoulders. The police were unable to catch Rader, and he continued to kill with impunity.
Capture and Trial
In 2005, Rader made a fatal mistake. He sent a floppy disk to a local television station, containing information about his crimes. The police were able to trace the disk back to Rader, and he was arrested on February 25, 2005.
Rader pleaded guilty to all 10 murders. He was sentenced to 10 consecutive life sentences, without the possibility of parole. Rader is currently serving his sentence at the El Dorado Correctional Facility in Kansas.
Motives and Psychology
Rader's motives for killing are complex and unclear. He has claimed that he was driven by a need for control and power. He has also said that he enjoyed the feeling of torturing and killing his victims.
Psychologists who have studied Rader believe that he is a psychopath. Psychopaths are characterized by a lack of empathy and remorse. They are also often manipulative and charming. Rader is a classic example of a psychopath.
