Early Life and Career
Blackburn was born in 1920 in the small town of Blacksburg, North Carolina. He grew up in a poor family, but he was a gifted athlete and a natural leader. After graduating from high school, Blackburn joined the Army and quickly rose through the ranks.
In 1942, Blackburn was assigned to the 1st Special Service Force, a joint Canadian-American unit that was tasked with conducting guerrilla warfare operations behind enemy lines. Blackburn quickly distinguished himself as a fearless and effective leader. He led his men on numerous successful missions, and he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's second highest military award for valor.
World War II
During World War II, Blackburn fought in North Africa, Italy, and France. He led his men on daring raids, ambushes, and sabotage operations. He also played a key role in the liberation of Rome and the invasion of southern France.
Blackburn's actions during the war earned him the respect of his fellow soldiers and his superiors. He was promoted to the rank of major and was awarded the Legion of Merit.
Korean War
After the war, Blackburn returned to the United States and served as an instructor at the Army's Special Warfare School. In 1950, he was recalled to active duty and sent to Korea.
In Korea, Blackburn led a guerrilla unit that operated behind enemy lines. He conducted raids, ambushes, and reconnaissance missions. He also provided intelligence to higher headquarters.
Blackburn's actions during the Korean War earned him the Silver Star, the Army's third highest military award for valor. He was also awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation.
Vietnam War
In 1965, Blackburn was sent to Vietnam. He served as an advisor to the South Vietnamese Army and led a team of Green Berets on special operations missions.
Blackburn's actions during the Vietnam War earned him the Bronze Star, the Army's fourth highest military award for valor. He was also awarded the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
Later Life
Blackburn retired from the Army in 1970. He spent his remaining years in Blacksburg, where he was active in his community. He died in 2013 at the age of 92.
