Here are some of the most famous examples of blind luck and other unusual phenomena in football history:
The Hand of God
One of the most controversial goals in football history, the Hand of God was scored by Diego Maradona in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England. Maradona jumped to head the ball past England goalkeeper Peter Shilton, but it was clear that he had used his hand to do so. The referee didn't see the handball, and Maradona's goal stood. Argentina went on to win the match and eventually the World Cup.
The Miracle of Istanbul
In the 2005 Champions League final, Liverpool FC came back from 3-0 down at half-time to beat AC Milan on penalties. It was an incredible comeback, and it was dubbed the "Miracle of Istanbul" by Liverpool fans. Many people believe that Liverpool were lucky to win the match, but there's no doubt that they showed great character and determination to come back from such a big deficit.
The Ghost Goal
In the 2010 World Cup round of 16 match between England and Germany, Frank Lampard scored a goal that was clearly over the line. However, the referee didn't give the goal, and Germany went on to win the match 4-1. The goal became known as the "Ghost Goal," and it was a major talking point in the aftermath of the match. Many people believe that England were unlucky not to win the match, and that the referee's mistake cost them a place in the quarter-finals.
The Zidane Headbutt
In the 2006 World Cup final, Zinedine Zidane headbutted Marco Materazzi in the chest. Zidane was sent off, and Italy went on to win the match on penalties. It was a shocking incident, and it overshadowed what had been a great match up to that point. Many people believe that Zidane was unlucky to be sent off, and that he should have been allowed to finish the match.
The Suarez Bite
In the 2014 World Cup group stage match between Uruguay and Italy, Luis Suarez bit Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder. Suarez was banned for nine matches for the incident, and Uruguay were eliminated from the World Cup in the round of 16. It was a bizarre and disgusting incident, and it damaged Suarez's reputation.
Football is a game full of surprises, and there are always strange and inexplicable things happening on the field. Sometimes, these things can have a major impact on the outcome of a match. But even when they don't, they can still provide us with some great entertainment.
