The story of Marleine Bastien is an extraordinary one. She was born in Haiti and came to the United States as a young immigrant. She worked as a housemaid to support herself and her family, but she always dreamed of something more.
Bastien was determined to get an education. She enrolled in community college and worked hard to earn good grades. She then transferred to Rutgers University, where she majored in political science. After graduating from Rutgers, she went on to earn a master's degree from the New School for Social Research.
In 2007, Bastien enrolled in the PhD program at Harvard University. She was one of only a few Haitian immigrants to ever be admitted to Harvard's PhD program. Bastien faced many challenges during her time at Harvard. She had to work full-time to support herself and her family, and she had to balance her studies with her work and family responsibilities.
Despite the challenges, Bastien persevered. She earned her PhD in government in 2014. Bastien's dissertation focused on the role of civil society organizations in the Haitian diaspora. Her research has been widely cited and has helped to shape policy discussions on Haitian immigration.
Since earning her PhD, Bastien has become a leading advocate for Haitian immigrants. She is the founder and executive director of the Haitian Women's Health Organization, which provides health care and social services to Haitian immigrants in New York City.
Bastien is also a vocal critic of the Trump administration's immigration policies. She has spoken out against the administration's travel ban on citizens from several Muslim-majority countries, and she has called for an end to the detention of immigrant children.
Bastien's story is an inspiration to us all. It shows us that anything is possible if we set our minds to it. No matter what challenges we face in life, we can overcome them if we have the determination and the support of others.
The Power of Education
Bastien's story is a testament to the power of education. Education can change our lives and give us the tools we need to succeed. It can help us to overcome adversity, achieve our dreams, and make a difference in the world.
We should all have access to quality education, regardless of our background or circumstances. Education is the key to a better future for us all.
The Importance of Community
Bastien's story also shows us the importance of community. She was able to achieve her goals because she had the support of her family, her friends, and her community. She was surrounded by people who believed in her and who were willing to help her succeed.
We all need a strong community to support us in our lives. We need people who will encourage us, challenge us, and help us to reach our full potential.
Thank you, Marleine Bastien, for sharing your story with us. You are an inspiration to us all.
