Lennox was born in 1764 to Lieutenant-General Lord George Lennox and Lady Louisa Kerr. He was the great-grandson of King Charles II and the grandson of the first Duke of Richmond. From an early age, Lennox showed signs of great intelligence and ambition. He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he excelled in his studies.

In 1789, Lennox entered the House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for Chichester. He quickly made a name for himself as a skilled orator and a rising star in the Whig party. However, his political career was cut short in 1790 when he succeeded his father as Duke of Richmond. As a peer, he entered the House of Lords, where he continued to play an active role in politics.

Lennox was a staunch supporter of the French Revolution. He believed that the French people had the right to overthrow their monarchy and establish a republic. However, he was also deeply concerned about the excesses of the Revolution, particularly the Reign of Terror. In 1793, he broke with the Whigs and joined the government of William Pitt the Younger. As a member of the government, Lennox played a key role in the war against France.

In 1807, Lennox was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. He held this post until 1813, during which time he played a significant role in the suppression of the Irish Rebellion of 1798. He also introduced a number of reforms to Ireland, including the establishment of the Royal Irish Constabulary.

Lennox died in 1819 at the age of 55. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Charles Gordon-Lennox, 5th Duke of Richmond. Charles Lennox, Fourth Duke of Richmond, was a complex and controversial figure. He was a brilliant politician, a skilled orator, and a loyal friend. However, he was also deeply ambitious and ruthless. His life was marked by both triumph and tragedy, and he remains one of the most fascinating characters in British history.
