American POWs Held Captive In The Cabanatuan Camp As Good As Dead: The Daring Escape Of American POWs From A Japanese Death Camp (American War Heroes)

The Horrors of Cabanatuan

Cabanatuan, located in central Luzon, was one of several POW camps under Japanese control during the war. Established in 1942, it quickly gained a reputation for its harsh conditions, malnutrition, and brutality. Over 3,000 American and Filipino POWs were interned in the camp, subjected to daily beatings, starvation rations, and forced labor.

Among the American POWs were Brigadier General Philip Morris, Colonel James Fisher, and Captain Donald Blackburn. As the senior officers, they recognized the dire situation and knew that escape was their only chance of survival.

Planning the Escape

Planning for the escape began in secret. The prisoners organized themselves into small groups, each with specific tasks. Robert Prince, a former paratrooper, was responsible for reconnaissance and gathering intelligence. Bob Morehead, a medic, provided medical support and first aid.

Communication between the groups was crucial, but extremely dangerous. The Japanese guards patrolled the camp constantly, and any suspicious activity could lead to severe punishment or execution.

The Raid

On the night of January 30, 1945, the American forces launched a daring raid on Cabanatuan. Led by U.S. Army Rangers, the raid aimed to liberate the POWs and destroy the camp.

Meanwhile, inside the camp, the POWs were ready for their part of the plan. As the gunfire erupted outside, they broke through the barbed wire fence and made their way to the prearranged rendezvous point.

The escape was chaotic and fraught with danger. Japanese guards fired on the escaping prisoners, and many were wounded or killed. However, the American Rangers fought valiantly, clearing a path for the POWs.

A Successful Escape

Over 500 American POWs escaped Cabanatuan that night. The raid was a resounding success, not only in terms of liberating the prisoners but also in demonstrating the resilience and courage of the human spirit.

The escaped POWs were taken to safety and given medical attention. Many were severely malnourished and had sustained various injuries, but they had survived the horrors of Cabanatuan and escaped with their lives.
