In this article, we will hear from kids in orange—youth who have spent time in juvenile detention. They will share their stories of abuse, neglect, and violence. They will also talk about their hopes and dreams for the future.
A Culture of Violence
Juvenile detention centers are often violent places. In a 2013 study by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 40% of youth in detention reported being physically assaulted by staff in the past year. And 15% reported being sexually assaulted.
This violence is often used to control and punish youth. It can lead to serious physical and psychological injuries. And it can make it difficult for youth to rehabilitate and reintegrate into society.
"I was beaten up by the guards for no reason," said one youth in detention. "They just wanted to show me who was boss."
"I was sexually assaulted by a staff member," said another youth. "I was so scared and humiliated. I didn't know what to do."
Lack of Education and Rehabilitation
Juvenile detention centers are also often lacking in education and rehabilitation programs. This can make it difficult for youth to learn the skills they need to succeed in life. And it can increase their risk of recidivism.
"I didn't get any education while I was in detention," said one youth. "I just sat in my cell all day ng nothing."
"I didn't get any counseling or therapy while I was in detention," said another youth. "I just got locked up and forgotten about."
Hopes and Dreams
Despite the challenges they face, the kids in orange have hopes and dreams for the future. They want to get an education, get a job, and start a family. They want to make a positive contribution to society.
"I want to go to college and become a social worker," said one youth. "I want to help other kids who have been through what I've been through."
"I want to get a job and support my family," said another youth. "I want to be a good role model for my kids."
The kids in orange are our future. They deserve a chance to succeed. We need to invest in education and rehabilitation programs that can help them reach their full potential.
We also need to hold juvenile detention centers accountable for the abuse and neglect that occurs within their walls. We need to make sure that these kids are treated with dignity and respect.
By investing in our youth, we can build a better future for all.
