Yeager was born in Myra, West Virginia, in 1923. He grew up on a farm and learned to fly at a young age. After graduating from high school, he joined the Army Air Corps in 1941. During World War II, Yeager flew 64 combat missions in the P-51 Mustang. He shot down 13 enemy aircraft, making him one of the top American aces of the war.
After the war, Yeager was assigned to the NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics),the predecessor to NASA. In 1947, he was selected to fly the Bell X-1, the first aircraft to break the sound barrier. On October 14, 1947, Yeager flew the X-1 to a speed of Mach 1.06, becoming the first human to travel faster than the speed of sound.
Yeager's groundbreaking flight in the X-1 paved the way for the development of supersonic aircraft and space exploration. He continued to fly test aircraft for the NACA and NASA for many years, and he made significant contributions to the development of the X-15, the SR-71 Blackbird, and the Space Shuttle.
Yeager retired from the Air Force in 1975, but he continued to fly for many years after that. He died in 2020 at the age of 97. He is considered one of the greatest aviators of all time, and his story is an inspiration to all who dream of achieving great things.
