The Forest Service in Transition: A Memoir
I spent 30 years with the Forest Service, and I saw a lot of changes. The agency has always been a leader in conservation, but in recent years it has faced new challenges, including climate change, wildfire, and a growing population.

In my memoir, The Forest Service in Transition, I share my experiences and insights about these challenges. I also discuss the agency's efforts to adapt to change and continue its mission of protecting and managing the nation's forests.
Climate Change
Climate change is one of the most serious challenges facing the Forest Service. Rising temperatures, changes in precipitation patterns, and more frequent and severe wildfires are all having a significant impact on our forests.
The Forest Service is working to adapt to climate change by planting more resilient trees, restoring forests after wildfires, and developing new fire management strategies. The agency is also working with other organizations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change.
Wildfire
Wildfire is another major challenge facing the Forest Service. The number of wildfires has increased in recent years, and the fires are burning more intensely and covering larger areas.
The Forest Service is working to reduce the risk of wildfire by managing forests to reduce fuel loads, educating the public about wildfire prevention, and developing new fire suppression strategies. The agency is also working with other organizations to develop fire-resistant building materials and technologies.
Growing Population
The population of the United States is growing, and this is putting increasing pressure on our forests. More people are using our forests for recreation, and this can lead to damage to the environment. The Forest Service is working to manage recreation use in a sustainable way, and the agency is also working to acquire more land for conservation.
The Forest Service is facing a number of challenges in the 21st century, but the agency is adapting to change and continuing its mission of protecting and managing the nation's forests. I am confident that the Forest Service will continue to be a leader in conservation for many years to come.
