Thomas B. Costain's The Three Edwards is a sweeping historical novel that tells the story of three generations of the Plantagenet family during the 14th century. The novel follows the lives of Edward I, Edward II, and Edward III, and explores the complex relationships between them and the women in their lives.
The novel begins with the reign of Edward I, known as the "Hammer of the Scots." Edward I was a strong and capable king who fought many wars against the Scots, Welsh, and Irish. He was also a devoted husband and father, and he had a close relationship with his queen, Eleanor of Castile. Edward I's reign was marked by a number of important events, including the signing of the Magna Carta, the conquest of Wales, and the establishment of the English parliament.

Edward I was succeeded by his son, Edward II, who was a much weaker and less capable king. Edward II was heavily influenced by his favorites, Piers Gaveston and Hugh Despenser the Younger. Gaveston and Despenser were unpopular with the English barons, and their influence led to a number of rebellions. Edward II's reign ended in tragedy when he was deposed and murdered by his own queen, Isabella of France.
Edward II was succeeded by his son, Edward III, who was a much more successful king than his father. Edward III was a skilled military leader who led England to victory in the Hundred Years' War against France. He was also a patron of the arts and sciences, and his reign saw the beginning of the English Renaissance. Edward III's reign was marked by a number of important events, including the Battle of Crécy, the Battle of Poitiers, and the signing of the Treaty of Brétigny.
The Three Edwards is a richly detailed and immersive historical epic that brings the Middle Ages to life. Costain's writing is clear and engaging, and he does an excellent job of capturing the complexities of the period. The novel is full of vivid characters, from the ambitious Edward I to the tragic Edward II to the brilliant Edward III. Costain also does an excellent job of depicting the social and political landscape of the period, and he brings the sights and sounds of the Middle Ages to life.
The Three Edwards is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of England or the Middle Ages. It is a sweeping and epic tale that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.
