In the early 1970s, I was a young writer living in San Francisco. I had just finished my first novel, and I was looking for a job. One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for a writer at Rolling Stone magazine. I applied, and I got the job.

Rolling Stone was a different kind of magazine back then. It was founded in 1967 by Jann Wenner, a young man who was passionate about rock and roll music. The magazine was a reflection of Wenner's own personality: it was irreverent, iconoclastic, and full of energy.

I was immediately drawn to the magazine's spirit. I loved the writing, the music, and the people who worked there. I quickly became a part of the Rolling Stone family, and I spent the next several years working on some of the most memorable stories in the magazine's history.

One of my first assignments was to interview Hunter S. Thompson, the legendary gonzo journalist. Thompson was a wild and crazy guy, but he was also a brilliant writer. I spent several days with him at his home in Aspen, Colorado, and I came away with a deep admiration for his work.

Another memorable assignment was to cover the Rolling Stones' 1972 tour of the United States. I followed the band from city to city, and I got to see them perform some of their greatest hits. It was an amazing experience, and I was honored to be a part of it.

In the early 1980s, I left Rolling Stone to pursue other projects. But I never forgot my time there. It was a period of great growth and learning for me, and I made some lifelong friends.

Rolling Stone is still going strong today, and it remains one of the most influential magazines in the world. I'm proud to have been a part of its history, and I'm grateful for the memories I made there.

Here are some of my favorite memories from my time at Rolling Stone:

  • Interviewing Hunter S. Thompson at his home in Aspen, Colorado.
  • Covering the Rolling Stones' 1972 tour of the United States.
  • Writing a cover story on Bob Dylan.
  • Interviewing John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
  • Attending the premiere of The Last Waltz, Martin Scorsese's documentary about The Band.

I'm grateful for the opportunity to have worked at Rolling Stone during its heyday. It was a time of great change and excitement in the world, and I was lucky to be a part of it.
