Cushing's Early Life

World War II

The Japanese eventually overwhelmed the American and Filipino forces on Bataan, and Cushing and his men were forced to surrender in April 1942.

The Bataan Death March

After surrendering, Cushing and his men were forced to march 60 miles to a prison camp in Camp O'Donnell. The march was brutal, and many prisoners died from starvation, disease, and exhaustion. Cushing himself was severely injured during the march, but he managed to survive.

Escape and Guerrilla Warfare

In October 1942, Cushing escaped from Camp O'Donnell and made his way to the mountains of Luzon. There, he organized a guerrilla force of Filipino civilians and soldiers who had also escaped from Japanese captivity. Cushing's guerrillas carried out raids against Japanese forces and helped to sabotage the Japanese war effort.

Capture of General Homma

In February 1945, Cushing and his guerrillas captured Japanese General Masaharu Homma, who was the commander of the Japanese forces in the Philippines. Homma was responsible for the Bataan Death March, and his capture was a major blow to the Japanese war effort.

Liberation of the Philippines

Cushing and his guerrillas continued to fight until the Philippines was liberated from Japanese occupation in August 1945. After the war, Cushing was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, and the Bronze Star for his bravery and leadership. He retired from the Army in 1946 and returned to the Philippines, where he lived until his death in 1976.
