A Profile of an American Hero
Lieutenant Paul Shulman was an American naval officer who volunteered to fight for Israel in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. He went on to become a highly decorated admiral in the Israeli Navy, serving in both the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War.
Shulman was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1922. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1944 and served in the US Navy during World War II. After the war, he volunteered to fight for Israel in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
Shulman arrived in Israel in 1948 and quickly joined the Israeli Navy. He served as a deck officer on the INS Mizpah, a former US Navy minesweeper that had been transferred to Israel. Shulman participated in several naval battles during the 1948 war, including the Battle of Acre and the Battle of Haifa.
After the 1948 war, Shulman remained in Israel and continued to serve in the Israeli Navy. He rose through the ranks quickly, and by 1956 he was commanding the Israeli destroyer INS Eilat. Shulman commanded the Eilat during the Suez Crisis in 1956, and he played a key role in the Israeli victory in the naval battle of Port Said.
In 1967, Shulman was promoted to rear admiral and given command of the Israeli Navy's Mediterranean Fleet. He led the Israeli Navy during the Six-Day War in 1967, and he was responsible for the Israeli victory in the naval battle of Latakia.
In 1973, Shulman was promoted to vice admiral and given command of the Israeli Navy's entire fleet. He led the Israeli Navy during the Yom Kippur War in 1973, and he was responsible for the Israeli victory in the naval battle of Damietta.
Shulman retired from the Israeli Navy in 1975, but he remained active in Israeli affairs. He was a member of the Israeli Knesset from 1981 to 1984, and he served as Israel's ambassador to the United States from 1985 to 1989.
