The Tony Awards are the most prestigious awards in American theater. Every year, the best and brightest of Broadway are honored for their work. But what about the shows that don't win? The ones that are just as deserving, but for whatever reason, don't get the recognition they deserve?
This article is a tribute to those shows. The ones that didn't win the Tony Award for Best Musical, but that are still worthy of our attention. These are the shows that pushed the boundaries of musical theater, that told important stories, and that left a lasting impression on audiences.
1. Follies (1971)
Follies is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Goldman. It tells the story of a reunion of former showgirls at their old theater. The show is a meditation on aging, loss, and the passage of time.
Follies was nominated for 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, but it lost to No Strings Attached. This was a controversial decision, as many critics felt that Follies was the more deserving show. Follies has since been revived several times, and it is now considered one of Sondheim's masterpieces.
2. A Chorus Line (1975)
A Chorus Line is a musical with music by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Edward Kleban, and a book by James Kirkwood Jr. and Nicholas Dante. It tells the story of a group of dancers who are auditioning for a Broadway show.
A Chorus Line was nominated for 12 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, but it lost to The Wiz. This was another controversial decision, as many critics felt that A Chorus Line was the more deserving show. A Chorus Line has since been revived several times, and it is now considered one of the greatest musicals of all time.
3. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1979)
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Hugh Wheeler. It tells the story of a barber who murders his customers and bakes them into pies.
Sweeney Todd was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, but it lost to Evita. This was another controversial decision, as many critics felt that Sweeney Todd was the more deserving show. Sweeney Todd has since been revived several times, and it is now considered one of Sondheim's masterpieces.
4. Sunday in the Park with George (1984)
Sunday in the Park with George is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine. It tells the story of the French painter Georges Seurat and his creation of the painting "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte."
Sunday in the Park with George was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, but it lost to La Cage aux Folles. This was another controversial decision, as many critics felt that Sunday in the Park with George was the more deserving show. Sunday in the Park with George has since been revived several times, and it is now considered one of Sondheim's masterpieces.
5. Into the Woods (1986)
Into the Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine. It tells the story of several fairy tale characters who interact with each other in the woods.
Into the Woods was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, but it lost to The Phantom of the Opera. This was another controversial decision, as many critics felt that Into the Woods was the more deserving show. Into the Woods has since been revived several times, and it is now considered one of Sondheim's masterpieces.
These are just a few of the many Broadway musicals that have not won the Tony Award for Best Musical. These shows are all worthy of our attention, and they all have something unique to offer.
