The first European settlers in Newton Township, Old Gloucester County, New Jersey, arrived in the early 1700s. These pioneers came from a variety of countries, including England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, and the Netherlands. They were drawn to the area by the promise of land, religious freedom, and economic opportunity.

The early settlers faced many challenges in their new home. The land was heavily forested, and they had to clear it before they could farm. The winters were long and cold, and the summers were hot and humid. There were also dangers from wildlife, such as bears, wolves, and panthers.

Despite the challenges, the early settlers persevered and built a thriving community. They established churches, schools, and businesses. They also played a role in the American Revolution, and many of them served in the Continental Army.

The following are biographical sketches of some of the most prominent early settlers in Newton Township:

  • John Reading was born in England in 1676. He emigrated to America in 1700 and settled in Newton Township in 1702. He was a farmer and a member of the Quaker faith. He served as a justice of the peace and a member of the New Jersey Assembly.
  • Thomas Hendrickson was born in the Netherlands in 1680. He emigrated to America in 1705 and settled in Newton Township in 1707. He was a farmer and a member of the Dutch Reformed Church. He served as a deacon and an elder in the church.
  • John Rambo was born in Germany in 1690. He emigrated to America in 1710 and settled in Newton Township in 1712. He was a farmer and a member of the Lutheran faith. He served as a deacon and an elder in the church.
  • William Mickle was born in Ireland in 1695. He emigrated to America in 1715 and settled in Newton Township in 1717. He was a farmer and a member of the Presbyterian faith. He served as a ruling elder in the church.
  • John Smith was born in Scotland in 1700. He emigrated to America in 1720 and settled in Newton Township in 1722. He was a farmer and a member of the Baptist faith. He served as a deacon and an elder in the church.

These are just a few of the many early settlers who helped to shape the history of Newton Township. Their stories are a reminder of the courage, determination, and faith that our ancestors possessed.
