Hitler's Childhood
Adolf Hitler was born in Braunau am Inn, Austria, on April 20, 1889. He was the fourth of six children born to Alois Hitler, a customs official, and Klara Pölzl, a peasant. Hitler's father was a strict disciplinarian, and his mother was a devout Catholic. Hitler's childhood was marked by poverty and violence. His father died when Hitler was 13, and his mother died of breast cancer when he was 18.
Hitler's early education was unremarkable. He attended a local primary school and then a secondary school in Linz. He was not a good student, and he often got into trouble with his teachers. Hitler dropped out of school at the age of 16 and moved to Vienna to pursue a career as an artist.
Hitler's Rise to Power
Hitler's artistic career was unsuccessful, and he eventually turned to politics. He joined the Nazi Party in 1919 and quickly rose through the ranks. In 1921, he became the party's leader. Hitler's charisma and oratory skills helped him to attract a large following. In 1933, Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany. He quickly consolidated his power and established a dictatorship.
Hitler's Private Life
Hitler's private life was a closely guarded secret. He was a loner who had few close friends. He never married, and he had no children. Hitler's only known romantic relationship was with Eva Braun, whom he met in 1929. Braun was a young woman who was infatuated with Hitler. She remained loyal to him until his death.
Hitler lived a simple life. He was a vegetarian and a teetotaler. He was also a hypochondriac who was obsessed with his health. Hitler's daily routine was regimented. He would wake up early and spend the morning reading and writing. He would then have lunch and take a siesta. In the afternoon, he would meet with his staff and attend to government business. In the evening, he would often dine with friends and family.
Hitler's Death
Hitler committed suicide on April 30, 1945, as the Soviet Army closed in on Berlin. He was 56 years old. Hitler's death marked the end of the Third Reich and the Nazi regime.
Despina Stratigakos's Hitler at Home is a fascinating and disturbing account of the private life of one of history's most notorious figures. Stratigakos's research is meticulous, and her writing is clear and concise. Hitler at Home is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the man who led Germany into World War II.
