Early Life and Education
Sandford Fleming was born on January 7, 1827, in Kirkcaldy, Scotland. His father was a weaver, and his mother was a dressmaker. Fleming received a basic education at the local parish school. At the age of 14, he was apprenticed to a land surveyor.
In 1845, Fleming emigrated to Canada with his family. He settled in Peterborough, Ontario, where he worked as a surveyor for the government. The Intercolonial Railway was a major project that was intended to connect the maritime provinces with the rest of Canada. Fleming oversaw the construction of the railway's line from Halifax to Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec.
The Intercolonial Railway was completed in 1876. It was a major achievement for Fleming and for Canada. The railway helped to unify the country and to促进 economic growth.
The Canadian Pacific Railway
In 1880, Fleming was appointed as the chief engineer of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The Canadian Pacific Railway was a transcontinental railway that was intended to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Fleming oversaw the construction of the railway's line from Montreal to Vancouver.

Standard Time
In 1878, Fleming proposed the idea of standard time. Standard time is a system of timekeeping that divides the world into 24 time zones. Each time zone is one hour different from the next. Fleming's proposal was adopted by the International Meridian Conference in 1884.
Standard time has had a major impact on the way that we live. It has made it easier to travel and to communicate across long distances. It has also helped to improve safety and efficiency in many industries.
Later Life and Legacy
Fleming retired from the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1888. He continued to work on a variety of projects, including the development of the trans-Pacific cable and the establishment of the Royal Canadian Institute. Fleming died in Ottawa on July 22, 1915.
