Benjamin Banneker was born in 1731 on a tobacco plantation in Maryland. His father was a freed slave, and his mother was an indentured servant. Despite the limitations imposed by his race and social status, Banneker showed a keen interest in learning at a young age.
Banneker's formal education was limited to a few years of schooling in a Quaker school. However, he was a voracious reader and taught himself mathematics, astronomy, and surveying. In 1753, he published his first almanac, which contained astronomical calculations, weather predictions, and agricultural advice. The almanac was a success, and Banneker continued to publish it for the next 25 years.
In addition to his work as an almanac publisher, Banneker was also a skilled surveyor. He was responsible for surveying the boundary between Maryland and Delaware in 1789. This was a major undertaking, and Banneker's work was highly praised by George Washington, who was then President of the United States.
Banneker was also an active civic activist. He was a member of the American Philosophical Society, and he corresponded with many of the leading scientists and intellectuals of his day. He was a strong advocate for the abolition of slavery and for the rights of African Americans. In 1791, he wrote a letter to Thomas Jefferson, then Secretary of State, in which he condemned slavery as a "moral and political evil." Jefferson was impressed by Banneker's letter, and he responded by inviting him to visit him in Philadelphia.
Banneker's visit to Philadelphia was a major event in his life. He met with many of the city's most influential citizens, including President Washington. Banneker also visited the University of Pennsylvania, where he was awarded an honorary degree. He returned to Maryland a respected and admired man.
Banneker continued to work as a surveyor and almanac publisher until his death in 1806. He was a remarkable man who made significant contributions to science, astronomy, and civic life. His life and work are an inspiration to us all.
