Early Life

Saladin was born in Tikrit, Iraq, in 1137. His father was a Kurdish military commander, and his mother was an Arab. Saladin received a traditional Islamic education and was trained in the art of war. He began his military career as a commander in the army of the Zengid dynasty.

Rise to Power

In 1169, Saladin became the vizier of Egypt. He quickly consolidated his power and established himself as the de facto ruler of the country. In 1171, he founded the Ayyubid dynasty, which ruled over Egypt, Syria, and Palestine.

Battle of Hattin

In 1187, Saladin led the Muslim forces to victory over the Crusaders at the Battle of Hattin. This victory was a turning point in the Crusades and led to the eventual defeat of the Crusaders.

Conquest of Jerusalem

After the Battle of Hattin, Saladin conquered Jerusalem. He allowed the Christian inhabitants of the city to leave unharmed, and he granted them freedom of worship. Saladin's conquest of Jerusalem was a major blow to the Crusaders and helped to restore Muslim control over the city.

Later Life

After his conquest of Jerusalem, Saladin continued to expand his empire. He conquered Yemen and parts of Anatolia. He also defeated the Byzantine Empire at the Battle of Myriokephalon. Saladin died in 1193 at the age of 56.

Saladin is considered one of the greatest Muslim leaders in history. He was a skilled military tactician and a compassionate ruler. He united the Islamic world and defeated the Crusaders. Saladin's legacy continues to inspire Muslims today.
