Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, was a British royal who served his country with distinction for over 50 years. Prince Edward was a popular figure with the British public. He was known for his warm personality and his commitment to public service. He was also a keen sportsman, and enjoyed playing tennis, golf, and cricket.

Prince Edward died on 13 January 1999, at the age of 63. He was survived by his wife, Katharine, Duchess of Kent, and their three children, George, Earl of St Andrews, Lady Helen Taylor, and Lord Nicholas Windsor.

Early Life and Education

Prince Edward was born at Buckingham Palace on 9 October 1935. He was the fourth child and second son of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. He was baptized at Windsor Castle on 25 November 1935, and given the names Edward George Nicholas Paul Patrick.

Prince Edward spent his early years at Buckingham Palace and Royal Lodge, Windsor. He was educated at Eton College, where he excelled in academics and sports. He was also a keen musician, and played the piano, violin, and cello.

In 1953, Prince Edward entered the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He graduated in 1955, and was commissioned into the Royal Scots Greys. He served in the British Army for 20 years, and saw active service in Cyprus and Germany.

In 1976, Prince Edward was appointed Colonel of the Blues and Royals. He held this position until 1992.
