Charles Vest was born in 1942 in La Porte, Indiana. He earned a bachelor's degree in physics from Purdue University in 1964 and a doctorate in applied physics from Harvard University in 1967. After completing his doctorate, Vest joined the faculty of MIT, where he taught for 14 years.
In 1981, Vest was appointed provost of MIT. As provost, he oversaw the academic and research programs of the university. He also played a key role in the development of several new initiatives, including the MIT Media Lab and the MIT Biotechnology Center.
