The Biography of Major Mick Mannock DFC: A Vintage Aviation Series
Major Edward Mannock, DFC, was one of the most successful British fighter pilots of World War I. He was credited with 61 victories, making him the third-highest-scoring British ace of the war. Early Life and Career
Edward Mannock was born on 24 May 1887 in St. Helier, Jersey, in the Channel Islands. He was the son of an Irish father and a French mother. Mannock was educated at Victoria College, Jersey, and then at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was commissioned into the British Army in 1909 and served with the Royal Field Artillery in India.
In 1915, Mannock transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. He was posted to No. 1 Squadron and flew Sopwith Pup and Sopwith Camel fighter planes. Mannock quickly proved to be a skilled pilot and a dangerous opponent in the air. He scored his first aerial victory in September 1916.
The Red Baron
In 1917, Mannock was transferred to No. 40 Squadron and began flying the SE5a fighter plane. He quickly became one of the squadron's leading pilots and was credited with shooting down several German aces, including Manfred von Richthofen, the "Red Baron".
Mannock was a fearless pilot and was known for his aggressive flying style. He was also a skilled marksman and was able to shoot down enemy aircraft from long distances. Mannock's success in the air made him a popular figure with the British public and he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) in 1918.
Death and Legacy
Mannock was killed in action on 26 July 1918, when his plane was shot down by German anti-aircraft fire. He was 31 years old. Mannock's death was a great loss to the Royal Flying Corps and he was mourned by his fellow pilots and the British public.
Mannock is remembered as one of the greatest fighter pilots of World War I. He was a skilled pilot, a dangerous opponent in the air, and a popular figure with his fellow pilots and the British public.
