Douglass was born into slavery in Talbot County, Maryland. His mother was a slave, and his father was a white man who may have been his master. Douglass never knew his father, and he was separated from his mother at an early age. He was raised by his grandmother, who taught him to read and write.
In 1838, Douglass escaped from slavery and made his way to New York City. He soon became involved in the abolitionist movement, and in 1841 he published his first book, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. The book was a bestseller, and it helped to raise awareness of the horrors of slavery.
Douglass continued to be a leading voice in the abolitionist movement throughout the 1840s and 1850s. He spoke at countless rallies and conventions, and he wrote several more books about his experiences as a slave. He also helped to organize the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses that helped slaves escape to freedom.
In 1861, the Civil War broke out, and Douglass urged President Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all slaves in the United States. After the war, Douglass continued to work for the rights of African Americans. He served as a diplomat and consul general to Haiti, and he was appointed U.S. Marshal for the District of Columbia by President Grant.
Douglass died in 1895, at the age of 77. He is remembered as one of the most important figures in the abolitionist movement, and his writings continue to inspire people today.
