The Zeller Congruence

The Zeller Congruence is a formula that can be used to calculate the day of the week for any given date. The formula is as follows:

h = (q + (26 * m - 2) - 2 * c + y + (y / 4) + (c / 4)) % 7

where:

  • q is the day of the month (1-31)
  • m is the month number (1-12)
  • c is the century (0 for the 19th century, 1 for the 20th century, etc.)
  • y is the year (0-99)

To use the Zeller Congruence, simply plug the given values into the formula and calculate the result. The result will be a number between 0 and 6, which corresponds to the day of the week (0 = Sunday, 1 = Monday, 2 = Tuesday, 3 = Wednesday, 4 = Thursday, 5 = Friday, 6 = Saturday).

Example

Let's say we want to find the day of the week for July 4, 1776. Using the Zeller Congruence, we can calculate the result as follows:

h = (4 + (26 * 7 - 2) - 2 * 18 + 76 + (76 / 4) + (18 / 4)) % 7 h = (4 + 182 - 36 + 76 + 19 + 4) % 7 h = 152 % 7 h = 4

The result is 4, which corresponds to Thursday. Therefore, July 4, 1776 was a Thursday.

The Zeller Congruence is a useful tool for finding the day of the week for any given date. With a little bit of practice, you can use the formula to quickly and easily calculate the day of the week for any day in the century.
