Maynard Davies: A Biography

Maynard Davies was born in Utah in 1877. He grew up on a farm and developed a deep appreciation for the land. After graduating from high school, Davies attended Brigham Young University and then Cornell University, where he studied agriculture. In 1903, he joined the Bureau of Soils, which was later renamed the Soil Conservation Service.

Davies quickly rose through the ranks of the Soil Conservation Service, and in 1935 he was appointed chief of the agency. Under Davies' leadership, the SCS expanded its programs and activities, and it played a major role in the development of the nation's first soil conservation districts. Davies also worked closely with President Franklin D. Roosevelt to implement the New Deal's soil conservation programs.

Davies retired from the Soil Conservation Service in 1941, but he continued to be active in the conservation movement. He served as president of the Soil Conservation Society of America and was a member of the National Resources Board. Davies died in 1962.

Davies' Legacy

Maynard Davies was a visionary leader who helped to shape the field of soil conservation. His work helped to establish the Soil Conservation Service as a major force in the conservation movement, and his ideas continue to influence conservationists today.

One of Davies' most important contributions was his emphasis on the importance of soil conservation districts. Soil conservation districts are local units of government that are responsible for developing and implementing soil conservation plans. Davies believed that soil conservation was best accomplished through local action, and he worked tirelessly to promote the establishment of soil conservation districts.

Davies also played a major role in the development of the Soil Conservation Service's technical assistance program. This program provides farmers and ranchers with technical assistance to help them conserve their soil. Davies believed that farmers and ranchers needed to have access to the latest scientific information in order to make informed decisions about how to manage their land. The Soil Conservation Service's technical assistance program has helped millions of farmers and ranchers to conserve their soil.

Davies was a strong advocate for conservation education. He believed that it was important to educate people about the importance of soil conservation, and he worked to develop educational programs for both children and adults. The Soil Conservation Service's educational programs have helped to raise awareness of the importance of soil conservation, and they have inspired generations of conservationists.
