Early Life and Career

Ralph Alexander Cochrane was born in London on 15 January 1895. He was the son of Captain Alexander Cochrane, a Royal Navy officer, and his wife, Margaret. Cochrane was educated at Eton College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. In 1914, he joined the Royal Flying Corps, the forerunner of the Royal Air Force.

Cochrane saw action in the First World War, flying as a pilot in France and Mesopotamia. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his bravery and skill in aerial combat. After the war, Cochrane remained in the RAF, serving in a variety of roles, including as commanding officer of the No. 1 Fighter Squadron and the Royal Air Force College Cranwell.

The Second World War

When the Second World War broke out in 1939, Cochrane was appointed Air Officer Commanding, No. 2 Group, RAF Fighter Command. He played a key role in the Battle of Britain, leading his group of fighter squadrons in the defense of southern England against the German Luftwaffe. Cochrane's leadership and tactical brilliance were instrumental in the RAF's victory in the battle.

In 1941, Cochrane was promoted to Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Fighter Command. He continued to lead the RAF's fighter forces with great distinction throughout the war, overseeing the development and deployment of new aircraft and tactics. Cochrane was also responsible for the establishment of the Pathfinder Force, a specialized unit tasked with bombing enemy targets with precision.

Post-War Career

After the war, Cochrane served as Chief of the Air Staff from 1945 to 1948. He was then appointed Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Malta, a position he held until 1951. Cochrane retired from the RAF in 1952, but he continued to play an active role in aviation, serving as President of the Royal Aeronautical Society from 1953 to 1956.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Ralph Cochrane was one of the most influential and successful military leaders in British history. His leadership during the Battle of Britain and the Second World War was instrumental in the Allied victory.
