The Early Years
Ali was born Cassius Clay in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1942. He began boxing at the age of 12 and quickly rose through the amateur ranks. In 1960, he won a gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the Olympic Games in Rome.
Frazier was born in Beaufort, South Carolina, in 1944. He also began boxing at an early age and had a successful amateur career. In 1964, he won a gold medal in the heavyweight division at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The Rivalry
Ali and Frazier first met in the ring in 1971. Ali won the fight by unanimous decision. However, the rivalry was far from over. The two fighters met again in 1974 in what was billed as the "Thrilla in Manila." The fight was one of the most brutal in boxing history. Ali won by technical knockout in the 14th round.
The rivalry between Ali and Frazier was more than just a boxing rivalry. It was a clash of personalities and ideologies. Ali was a charismatic and outspoken activist who fought for civil rights and religious freedom. Frazier was a quiet and humble man who was content to let his fists do the talking.
The Legacy
Ali and Frazier both went on to have successful boxing careers. Ali won 56 of his 61 fights, while Frazier won 32 of his 37 fights. Both fighters were inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
The rivalry between Ali and Frazier is considered one of the greatest in sports history. It was a rivalry that defined an era and captivated the attention of the world.
