Holloway's Journey

Holloway was born in 1933 in a working-class family in Edinburgh. He left school at the age of 15 and worked as a laborer and a clerk before being called to the priesthood. He was ordained in 1958 and served as a parish minister in various parts of Scotland before being elected Bishop of Edinburgh in 1986.

Holloway's journey to the priesthood was not an easy one. He struggled with poverty, ill health, and doubts about his faith. However, he was sustained by a deep sense of compassion and a desire to serve others. His experiences as a parish minister and a bishop gave him a unique perspective on the human condition, and he became known for his outspoken views on social and moral issues.

The Journal of an Improbable Shepherd

The Journal of an Improbable Shepherd is a collection of reflections on Holloway's life and ministry. The book is divided into four parts, each of which explores a different aspect of Holloway's journey. The first part, "The Call," tells the story of Holloway's call to the priesthood. The second part, "The Ministry," explores his experiences as a parish minister. The third part, "The Bishop," examines his role as Bishop of Edinburgh. And the fourth part, "The Shepherd," reflects on Holloway's understanding of the role of the church in the world.

Throughout the book, Holloway writes with honesty and candor about his struggles and doubts. He does not shy away from controversy, and he is willing to challenge the status quo. However, he is also a man of deep faith, and he believes that the church has an important role to play in the world.

The Journal of an Improbable Shepherd is a moving and thought-provoking memoir. Holloway's journey is a testament to the power of faith and the importance of compassion. The book is a must-read for anyone interested in the human condition, the church, or the search for meaning in life.
