Span and Booknotes are two of the most popular literary magazines in the United States. For 25 years, they have been publishing some of the best writing from around the world. In honor of their anniversary, we're taking a look back at some of their most memorable stories.

Span

Span was founded in 1974 by a group of writers and editors who wanted to create a magazine that would publish the best writing from Latin America and Spain. Over the years, Span has published stories by some of the most important writers in the Spanish-speaking world, including Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Isabel Allende.

One of the most memorable stories published in Span is "The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World" by Gabriel García Márquez. The story tells the tale of a young man who washes ashore on a beach and is mistaken for a saint. The villagers are so taken with his beauty that they build a shrine around his body and pray to him. However, the young man's true identity is eventually revealed, and the villagers are left to mourn the loss of their beloved saint.

Another memorable story published in Span is "The House on Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros. The story follows the lives of a group of young Latina women who live in a poor neighborhood in Chicago. The women face a variety of challenges, including poverty, racism, and sexism. However, they also find strength and support in each other.

Booknotes

Booknotes was founded in 1979 by Brian Lamb. The magazine features interviews with authors, critics, and other literary figures. Over the years, Booknotes has interviewed some of the most important writers of our time, including Salman Rushdie, Toni Morrison, and Maya Angelou.

One of the most memorable interviews published in Booknotes is with Salman Rushdie. The interview took place in 1989, shortly after Rushdie's novel "The Satanic Verses" was banned in Iran. Rushdie discussed the controversy surrounding the book and his own experiences as a writer.

Another memorable interview published in Booknotes is with Toni Morrison. The interview took place in 1993, shortly after Morrison won the Nobel Prize in Literature. Morrison discussed her writing process and her commitment to telling the stories of African-Americans.

Span and Booknotes have been publishing some of the best writing from around the world for 25 years. Their magazines have introduced readers to new voices and perspectives, and they have helped to shape the literary landscape of our time.
