After 35 years at Bank of Montreal (BMO),I am retiring. It is an emotional time as I reflect on my journey and the many people who have shaped me along the way.

I have been fortunate to have had many great mentors, colleagues, and friends at BMO. I have learned so much from them, and I am grateful for their guidance and support.

In this article, I want to share 25 tales about leadership learning and legacy from my time at BMO. I hope that these stories will inspire and motivate you on your own leadership journey.

1. The Power of Humility

One of the most important things I have learned about leadership is the power of humility. True leaders are not afraid to admit their mistakes, and they are always willing to learn from others.

I remember a time when I was a young manager and I made a big mistake. I was so embarrassed and ashamed, but I knew that I had to own up to it. I went to my boss and apologized, and I asked for his help in fixing the problem.

My boss was very understanding, and he helped me to learn from my mistake. He also gave me the confidence to keep moving forward and to never give up.

2. The Importance of Communication

Another important lesson I have learned about leadership is the importance of communication. Leaders need to be able to communicate clearly and effectively with their teams, their stakeholders, and the public.

I have seen firsthand how poor communication can lead to misunderstandings, conflict, and even failure. I have also seen how effective communication can build trust, create alignment, and drive results.

As a leader, it is your responsibility to make sure that your team understands your vision and your goals. You also need to be able to listen to your team and to understand their needs and concerns.

3. The Value of Teamwork

No one can achieve great things alone. Leadership is about building and leading teams. I have been fortunate to work with some amazing teams over the years, and I have learned so much from them.

I have learned that teamwork is essential for success. When people work together, they can achieve more than they could ever achieve on their own.

As a leader, it is your job to create a team environment where people feel valued, respected, and supported. You also need to be able to delegate tasks and to empower your team to make decisions.

4. The Power of Vision

Leaders need to have a vision for the future. They need to be able to see the potential in their team and in their organization.

I have seen firsthand how a clear and compelling vision can inspire people to achieve great things. I have also seen how a lack of vision can lead to stagnation and failure.

As a leader, it is your responsibility to articulate your vision for the future. You also need to be able to communicate your vision to your team and to get them excited about it.

5. The Importance of Integrity

Integrity is the foundation of leadership. Leaders need to be honest, ethical, and trustworthy.

I have seen firsthand how leaders who lack integrity can damage their team, their organization, and their reputation.

As a leader, it is your responsibility to set a high standard of integrity for yourself and for your team. You also need to be able to make tough decisions and to stand up for what is right, even when it is unpopular.

6. The Power of Passion

Leaders need to be passionate about their work. They need to believe in what they are ng and they need to be willing to go the extra mile to achieve their goals.

I have seen firsthand how passion can inspire people to achieve great things. I have also seen how a lack of passion can lead to burnout and failure.

As a leader, it is your responsibility to find your passion and to share
