Early Life and Career

Erich Alfred Hartmann was born on April 19, 1922, in Weissach im Tal, Germany. His father was a doctor and his mother was a nurse. Hartmann had a keen interest in aviation from a young age and joined the German Air Force in 1940. He was assigned to Fighter Squadron 52 (JG 52) and began flying the Messerschmitt Bf 109.

Aces of the Luftwaffe

During the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942, Hartmann began to distinguish himself as a skilled fighter pilot. He quickly rose through the ranks and became one of the most feared pilots in the Luftwaffe. Hartmann was known for his aggressive tactics and his ability to outmaneuver his opponents. By the end of 1942, he had already claimed over 100 aerial victories.

The Eastern Front

Hartmann spent most of his career fighting on the Eastern Front against the Soviet Union. The Eastern Front was the most brutal theater of war in World War 2, and Hartmann faced some of the most experienced and skilled pilots in the world. Despite the dangers, Hartmann continued to rack up victories at an astonishing rate.

Awarded The Knight's Cross

In March 1944, Hartmann was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds. This was the highest military decoration awarded by Nazi Germany, and it was only given to the most distinguished soldiers. Hartmann was the youngest recipient of the Knight's Cross with Diamonds at the age of 22.

End of the War

As the war drew to a close, Hartmann continued to fly combat missions. He claimed his 352nd and final aerial victory on April 8, 1945, just days before the end of the war. Hartmann was captured by American forces on May 8, 1945, and he was held as a prisoner of war until 1955.

Later Life

After his release from prison, Hartmann returned to Germany and joined the West German Air Force. He served as a fighter pilot until 1970, when he retired with the rank of colonel. Hartmann died on September 20, 1993, at the age of 71.
